The Igreja da Misericórdia (Church of Mercy) is dedicated to the Senhor Ecce-Homo, whose image, according to tradition, was found buried at the place known as Cortes and has been deeply venerated since time immemorial by the people of the surrounding region and even by those of neighbouring Galicia.
Its origins date back to the establishment of the Santa Casa da Misericórdia, which, owing to its devotion to the Senhor Ecce-Homo, commissioned an altar in the early 17th century, later expanding it into a chapel. Construction of the present church began around 1811. Above the main doorway is the crown of the Portuguese monarchy.
Inside the church are two images dating from before its construction: Nossa Senhora do Leite (Our Lady of the Milk), carved in Ançã stone and dating from the 15th century, and the Senhor Ecce-Homo, a wooden image covered by a mantle and dating from the late 16th century.
